N.C. State transfer tweets he'll join Wildcats

Ryan Harrow apparently will be the next in a line of highly-touted point guards to play for John Calipari.

The North Carolina State transfer tweeted on Wednesday night "I am a Kentucky Wildcat!" He confirmed by text message to Rivals.com's Jerry Meyer that he is transferring to UK.

Harrow, ranked the 19th-ranked player in the high school class of 2010, played 29 games for the Wolfpack as a freshman in 2010-11, starting 10. He averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists per game for N.C. State.

The 6-foot, 160-pound Harrow will have to sit out the 2011-12 season per NCAA transfer rules. He will be permitted to practice with the Wildcats and will be eligible at the start of the 2012-13 season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Ryan's offensive game will be an interesting component in the dribble-drive offense," Meyer said. "Coach Calipari will make him a better defender. All in all a great get because of the lack of elite dribble-drive type point guards in the 2012 high school class."

Harrow officially visited Kentucky, Texas, Louisville and Georgia this month and also considered St. John's after being granted a release to transfer from new N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried.

Harrow fills a void for UK if freshman point guard Marquis Teague becomes the fifth-straight Calipari-coached point guard to jump to the NBA after one season of college ball. Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans at Memphis and John Wall and Brandon Knight at Kentucky all have entered the NBA Draft after a season under Calipari.

Harrow's mother, Fern Harrow, has said her son would be eager to spend a season practicing every day against Teague and that it would benefit her son, who is also expected to focus on adding strength in his redshirt year.

Should Teague return for his sophomore season, Fern Harrow has said, both players could still thrive because Calipari succeeded in playing two point guards at once - Wall and Eric Bledsoe - during the 2009-10 season.
