NUMBER NOTES:
- Charles Gaines filled the No. 3 jersey that was vacant on the official roster last season. The jersey was worn by Trent Guy most recently, one of the top kick returners in Louisville history. Another wide receiver made the jersey famous as well, Tampa's J.R. Russell in 2002-04. Both Guy and Russell made NFL rosters after their time with Louisville.

- Teddy Bridgewater is wearing No. 5, the same number he wore at Miami Northwestern High. Bridgewater, will take over the number from last season's leader of the defense, Brandon Heath. Also one of the top-rated recruits Louisville has ever pulled out of Florida, Heath was also a four-star recruit coming out of high school, just like Bridgewater. Prior to Heath, the number was worn by QB Bill Ashburn and safety Antoine Sharp.

- QB Adam Froman most recently wore the No. 9 jersey that will now be on the shoulders of DeVante Parker. The top-rated recruit in Jefferson County for 2011, Parker wore No. 1 at Ballard, but will make the transition to No. 9 because fellow receiver Josh Bellamy has the No. 1 jersey this season. Joshua Tinch, one of the most-beloved receivers in Louisville history for his toughness and basketball skills, wore the No. 9 recently. Former Cardinal and Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch also wore No. 9 for the Cardinals.

- Miami Southridge corner Andrew Johnson will have big shoes to fill in the No. 15 jersey. That's Bilal Powell's jersey at Louisville. Powell was a 1,200-plus yard rusher for Louisville last season and was dubbed by Charlie Strong as the "Face of the Program." Now with the Jets, Powell joined another former No. 15 who spent time in the NFL, quarterback Dave Ragone.

- Cornerback Terrell Floyd from Port Pierce, Fla., also has some big shoes to fill. Current Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush used to wear the No. 19 for Louisville, and was one of the greatest athletes to done a UofL uniform. After Bush, the jersey was also worn by 2011 Third Round NFL Draft Pick Johnny Patrick.

- Freshman linebacker Brandon Golson will wear No. 21 this season, taking the jersey most recently worn by Troy Pascley. Prior to Pascley, the jersey was worn by Pittsburgh Steeler (and Super Bowl Champion) William Gay at Louisville.

- Local star Doug Beaumont wore No. 27 for Louisville for the last four years, but the new No. 27 will be Miami Northwestern cornerback Jermaine Reve. Smart and hard-working just like Beaumont, Reve will be stepping into some of the most-loved jerseys in recent UofL history. Beaumont was joined by another former Male High grad, Don Bibb, in wearing the No. 27 for Louisville.

- Louisville Fern Creek star Jalen Harrington will take jersey No. 42 this season. That jersey was made most-famous by former Pro Bowl RB/FB Ernie Green. After gaining 1,500 yards during his years at Louisville, Green was the lead blocker for Jim Brown in Cleveland and was a 1964 World Champion and two-time Pro Bowler. No. 42 was worn last season by cornerback Bobby Burns. Former Louisville starter and Animal Planet's King of the Jungle, Tony Stallings, also wore No. 42.

- Big defensive end Deiontrez Mount is stepping into the No. 48 jersey worn by no-neck, tough-as-nails fullback Joe Tronzo for four seasons. If Mount can be half as nasty breaking through the line of scrimmage as Tronzo, Louisville will have a very good defensive end on their hands.

- Dylan Kupper, Alex's "little" brother - we should say younger - will wear Josh Byrom's No. 65 this season. Dylan, 6-foot-5, 265, is just one number shy of his brother, Alex, who checked in at 6-3, 285 in the most-recent roster.

- John Miller, a strong offensive lineman from Miami, could get early playing time much like another No. 70, Breno Giacomini, got at Louisville. But while Giacomini started at tight end, Miller is all lineman. The NO. 70 jersey came open when Conrad Thomas graduated this year.

- Byron Stingily, one of the most physically impressive linemen in Louisville history at 6-6, 315-plus, was taken by the Tennessee Titans in the most-recent NFL Draft. That left his jersey No. 78 open for new big boy Aaron Epps. Not to be outdone by Stingily, Epps is listed on his first Louisville roster at 6-7, 250-pounds.

- Defensive linemen Lorenzo Mauldin and Jamon Brown will take over jerseys previously worn by Joe Townsend and Adrian Grady (94) and Patrick Grant and Zach Anderson (96).
