Monday Dawg Biscuits
We begin another week closer to college football kicking off and the staff at BDJ have been cooking up a nice batch of biscuits for you guys all weekend.
Bob's first biscuit: I had a really good talk with junior receiver Chad Bumphis about his career and MSU's depth being built at receiver. We'll have a long story on that shortly, but as he talks in that story about being a leader for the young guys, he said it was actually former MSU receiver Brandon McRae he leaned on when he got to MSU. Bumphis said he takes a lot of pride in helping the present development of the receivers.
Second biscuit: We received a call from Greene County (Miss.) tight end and MSU commitment Gus Walley. He said things have really slowed down for him since he committed and he isn't receiving any more mail or calls from other schools. Said MSU was his dream school and will be at as many games as possible this fall.
Logan's third biscuit: Louisville, Miss., wide receiver/ defensive back C.J. Bates really stood out in their 21-20 win over West Point in a jamboree held at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday. Bates played both ways most of the game and still managed to haul in two touchdown passes. He said after the game that he hasn't concentrated on recruiting much but has an offer from Memphis and believes he has one from Louisiana-Lafayette. He said the one school he'd like to receive an offer from would be Arkansas. He told me most schools are recruiting him as a receiver and after what I saw on Saturday I can see why.
Bob's fourth biscuit: Another Bumphis note: You heard us talk frequently about how good sophomore quarterback Tyler Russell looked in practice. While I'm sure you consider our opinion flawless, I wanted to pass on a perhaps more reliable one. I asked Bumphis a question about Chris Relf's development, not mentioning Russell, and Bumphis replied, "It's not just him, it's all of them. Tyler looks a lot better. Everybody is making strides."
Logan's fifth biscuit: Saturday I got a chance to catch up with 2013 West Point (Miss.) fullback Mario Virges. Of course, Virges is the younger brother of current MSU redshirt freshman defensive tackle Curtis Virges. The younger Virges is a punishing 5-foot-11, 215-pounds. He told me he likes running people over but deep down wants to be a true running back. He scored on a 4-yard run in the loss to Louisville.
Bob's gravy on top: A final note on Bumphis, this one a combo. He spoke highly of freshman receiver Joseph Morrow, saying he's a receiver that MSU doesn't have anyone like and that he's a true vertical threat. Bumphis was also asked about getting snaps at quarterback, something he hasn't done since he was a freshman. "I beg [Mullen] about it every day. Hopefully it's getting ahead a little bit." Mullen hinted that cornerback Johnthan Banks could potentially get some wildcat snaps.
Birthday biscuit: Today we here at BDJ would like to wish redshirt freshman outfielder Cody Abraham a happy birthday.
