Thursday's Morning Delivery

Good morning and welcome to the first installment of the Morning Delivery brought to you by the UPS Store of Starkville. I hope you enjoy today's delivery.

Bob's first package: We had a good talk with Dan Mullen about the special teams yesterday, which you'll see more from soon. He said he will be using the Friday scrimmage to find out who his main return guys will be. He said that instead of a "gunner" on kicks, MSU calls it their "missile." Mullen mentioned a few names as special teams standouts so far, those being LaDarius Perkins, Brandon Heavens, Marvin Bure, Damien Anderson and Louis Watson. He said that depth chart will be set next week. He also said to be wary of how good the kickers tell us they are doing because "those guys all stick together. They try to get more followers on their twitter accounts or something if they think they did really good."

Second package: We received a call from North Pike (Miss.) defensive end A.J. Jefferson. Jefferson says his recruiting is the same. He has no leader and that everyone who has offered him has a shot. His North Pike team opens up the season Friday night against Franklin County and he is ready to get back on the field.

Logan's third package: During the jamboree last weekend I had an opportunity to watch Columbus (Miss.) junior offensive tackle Jake Thomas for the second time. He has all of the tools to be a four-star caliber prospect in the 2013 class. Already 6-foot-5, 305-pounds, Thomas is very athletic for his size and will land his share of offers when that time comes. He said he is hearing from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Alabama right now and camped at all of those schools besides Ole Miss this summer. I'll have a chance to watch Thomas again on Friday as he battles Aberdeen and four-star defensive end Channing Ward.

Bob's fourth package: On Tuesday we told you Mullen said he wasn't sure yet about the No. 3 running back spot. We've told you how improved senior Robert Elliott looked early on in camp, so I asked Mullen if it was Elliott or bust at No. 3 until Nick Griffin gets healthy. He didn't say much about Elliott, but spoke more about the freshmen (Derrick Milton and Josh Robinson) competing for carries and the fullbacks, who he says he has more faith in with the ball in their hands this year than he did last year, though he said that doesn't necessarily mean they will get carries.

Logan's fifth package: Over the weekend I spoke with New Hope (Miss.) three-star tight end Lawrence Brown. I've covered him several times over the past few years and he definitely has the size to play tight end at the next level. Brown told me he had offers from Ole Miss and UAB currently. While he does not have an offer from Mississippi State, Brown was told by the Bulldogs coaches that he could come in and play early. He stated that he would like to play in the Southeastern Conference.

Logan's special delivery: on Tuesday I spoke with sophomore punter Baker Swedenburg. It's been since 2008 since he kicked in a live game and doesn't know what his emotions will be like when the Bulldogs kickoff the season on Sept.1. As many of you remember, Swedenburg is one of the last remaining members of Sylvester Croom's final signing class and greyshirted and redshirted his first two seasons after signing. As a lifelong Bulldog fan who grew up in Columbus, Miss., Swedenburg is as eager as anyone to get the season started.

The UPS Store of Starkville and the MSU Campus make the biscuits possible each and every morning. Stop by to see Mike and his staff on campus inside the Colvard Student Union or in town next door to Kroger. They can help you with all of your copying and shipping needs.
