Vanderbilt loses another overtime heartbreaker
One the heels of an overtime loss to a ranked team on Monday, Vanderbilt lost another on Friday.
Louisville's Peyton Siva drove the lane and hit a layup with 1.4 seconds left in overtime, giving the No. 6 Cardinals a 62-60 victory over No. 19 Vanderbilt at the Yum! Center on Friday evening.
Seva had 14 points, and Kyle Kuric, who hit a huge 3-pointer just inside a minute left, had 15 to lead the Cardinals (7-0) to a victory in a game where they trailed for most of the second half.
Vanderbilt (5-3) led thanks in large part to John Jenkins's hard-earned, game-high 27 points.
Jenkins was one of five VU starters to play at least 40 minutes, and that may have played a factor in the Commodores' 14-of-24 performance from the foul line.
The 'Dores led 43-34 with 8:18 left, Jeffery Taylor missed a pair of free throws started a span in which Louisville would out-score VU 7-0 over the next 2:44 to pull within two.
The game stayed close, and the Cards' Chane Behanan missed a layup that could have won the game in regulation.
VU led by five at one point in overtime after Jenkins hit two foul shots, but Behanan answered with a layup and a free throw to pull Louisville within two. The teams traded a pair of free throws, then Kuric hit a closely-contested 3 out of the left corner to put Louisville up one.
Jenkins hit a pair of free throws with 12.2 seconds left, but the Cards got the ball to Siva, who drove into the middle of the lane and got a great look for the winning score.
Vanderbilt led 26-25 at half, with Jenkins 13 points leading the way for either team. VU hit just 36 percent of its shots, but Louisville's 10 turnovers helped keep the Commodores in the lead.
Vanderbilt dropped an 82-70 loss to Xavier in Nashville on Monday.
