Jenkins stays home
Throughout the entire recruiting process, Harris County standout Jordan Jenkins kept his situation close to the proverbial vest, keeping reporters and coaches alike anxiously pondering what his eventual decision would be.
Monday night, he made it official, choosing the home-state Georgia Bulldogs over Alabama, Florida and Auburn to become Mark Richt's 16th verbal commitment for the Class of 2012.
A member of the Rivals100 squad, Jenkins is the nation's 60th-ranked player and the 6th-ranked weakside linebacker in the entire country. He is the fifth-ranked player in Georgia, according to UGASports.com.
In last week's Under Armour game in St. Petersburg, Jenkins collected eight tackles and two sacks.
Apparently, the relationship built between Bulldog defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and the Jenkins family helped seal the deal.
"Coach Grantham is a guy that we trust and admire," Jenkin's father, Ronald recently told UGASports. "He stands up for his players and is just an impressive man. His credentials speak for themselves when it comes to outside linebackers and defensive ends. He did a great job with (Justin) Houston last year and has done a great job with (Jarvis) Jones this year."
The Georgia defense finished at or near the top of the SEC in all major statistical categories in 2011 under Grantham, and it was his ability to coach up the entire defense that also impressed the Jenkins' patriarch.
"It is impressive just to see him game-planning and breaking things down on the opposing team. He is talking about specific situations and how they will defend them, then they just happen exactly like he says they will," said the elder Jenkins. "He taught it in such a way that the players could understand, I could understand it, and Jordan could definitely understand it. We were all able to understand him, and we were really impressed."
