NFL draft: How Rivals.com rated rounds 2 and 3

MORE: How the first-rounders were rated

The theme of the second day of the 2012 NFL Draft became apparent from the opening pick.

With that first choice of the second round Friday, the St. Louis Rams selected Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick, who had no stars attached to his name when he signed with the FCS power out of Columbia (S.C.) Ridge View High School.

And for the rest of the night, NFL teams wouldn't hesitate to take a chance on players who had slipped through the cracks during the recruiting process.

Four of the first eight picks in the second round were guys who began their college career as two-star or no-star recruits: Quick, Cincinnati defensive tackle Derek Wolfe (Denver Broncos), Clemson defensive end Andre Branch (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Midwestern (Texas) State offensive lineman Amini Silatolu (Carolina Panthers).

Later in the second round, Illinois offensive tackle Jeff Allen (Kansas City Chiefs), Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner (Seattle Seahawks) and Connecticut defensive tackle Kendall Reyes (San Diego Chargers) would join the parade of two-star prospects to get taken in the second round.

But the second day of the draft wasn't reserved entirely for sleepers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers used the 56th overall pick on Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams, the No. 3 overall recruit in the 2008 class. With the final selection of the second round, the New York Giants chose LSU wide receiver Rueben Randle, the nation's No. 2 recruit in 2009. A third five-star prospect - Ohio State wide receiver DeVier Posey - went to the Houston Texans in the third round with the 68th overall pick.
