Boys & Girls Earn Win at Tropical Fantasy

BROOKLYN, NY - Technically, it is the off-season. This is the time when tournaments and AAU basketball take over. However, there still is The Tropical Fantasy Basketball Classic being held at Thomas Jefferson High School. They have teams from a number of PSAL schools. Only kids who are returning players are playing in the tournament. Yesterday, Boys & Girls played Wings in a game that went to overtime.

Boys trailed 49-46 with seconds left in regulation. Courtney Solomon launched a three pointer that rattled through the basket to tie the game and set up another three minutes of action. In the overtime period, Boys scored the first six points and that was just enough of a cushion to squeeze out a 58-54 victory.

Wesley Myers was a vital part of Boys' team this past year. He helped Boys win the city championship for the third straight season. He will be a senior next season and is one of the best guards in the city. Myers was the primary ball handler in the contest, playing the point which is the position he will play in college. Myers did a good job all afternoon, scoring 10 of his 13 points in the first half. The best part of his game yesterday was his perimeter shot, knocking down 3 treys. He also showed a pretty solid handle, using each hand with ease while he attacked the basket off the dribble.

Solomon, a 5-10 shooting guard, actually led Boys in scoring, pouring in 18 points in the game. Solomon is a dangerous shooter, especially from behind the arc. He knocked down three bombs in the game, in addition to the one that tied it with seconds left.

Two players who show the potential of being able to play at the college level for Wings are Marvilio Berroa and Jaequan Brown. Each player only scored 6 points in the game, but they showed off various aspects of their game. Berroa is 6-4 and plays on the perimeter. His six points came from two shots from behind the arc. Brown is a 6-5 forward who plays closer to the basket and mixes it up inside, usually scoring on lay-ups and put backs.

Davonne Ragin, a 6-5 junior forward with a wide frame, led Wings in scoring with 11 points. He did a nice job playing physical and making key baskets in the second half and overtime. 5-8 junior guard Francisco Infante also scored 11 points in the game.
