Horns set to host a new JUCO target

The Texas Longhorn coaching staff continues to look for potential defensive playmakers off the edge, and the coaches are leaving no stone unturned in their search.

Alief Taylor standout Torrodney Prevot has been a UT target for a long while. As Texas looks high and low, you can now add the name of Trinity Valley Community College standout Kewan Alfred to the Texas recruiting list.

The 6-3, 245-pounder just recently began communicating with the UT coaches, and the initial contact happened in an untraditional way.

"The way it happened kind of funny. I training in my old high school (Beaumont Central). Major Applewhite came in and was recruiting some players in my old high school. I was there working out and he recognized me from senior year," Alfred said. "I gave him my email address. Five days later, coach (Oscar) Giles called me. He said t hey liked my high school tape and he wanted to see my junior college tape from last year. I sent it to him and he said he really likes it."

The Texas coaches have invited Alfred up to Austin for an unofficial visit and he's planning to make his way to the UT campus on June 27. Alfred said his conversations with Giles have indicated that a formal offer could be presented during that visit.

"According to coach Giles, they like my work ethic, my speed and that I don't give up on a play," Alfred said. "He told me one of his favorite plays on my high school highlight was when the play went to the other side of field. I chased it all the way down and made the tackle, even forced the fumble too."

Currently, Alfred has picked up offers from Ole Miss, UNLV, Louisiana Tech and Utah State. He took a unique path to Trinity Valley, signing with the Cardinals despite being a full qualifier out of high school. Alfred didn't make his grades until very late in the process. When he was cleared, Division I schools came calling but he had already signed with Trinity Valley CC and developed strong relationships with the Cardinals coaches.

"Nobody knew I was qualifying. It was a big guess so nobody wanted to take that chance," Alfred said of his recruitment at Beaumont Central. "A lot of schools wanted highlight tape, but I didn't have one until after I signed with Trinity Valley. I liked it here, got a good feel for the coaches, for the team. They showed me they can get people out to bigger schools quickly so I liked it."

Alfred plans to play for Trinity Valley this fall and then enroll at the Division I school of his choice in January of 2013, giving him two seasons of eligibility left.
