Hurricane beats Tulane, 45-10

Cody Green put up 274 yards through the air and Alex Singleton ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns to lead Tulsa to a 45-10 victory over Tulane on Saturday in a game marred by a serious injury to Tulane safety Devon Walker.

Walker, a senior, collided with teammate Julius Warmsley, a defensive lineman, helmet-to-helmet while attempting to make a tackle just before halftime. Walker was unable to move and was taken off the field in an ambulance and transported to a Tulsa hospital, where he was said to be in stable condition.

"Hearts and prayers are with that young man right now and his family," said Tulsa Head Coach Bill Blankenship. "I can't even imagine the struggle that that is. We just want to sincerely have our thoughts be with Devon Walker, Coach Johnson, the coaching staff and Devon's family. It's just a scary, horrible, heartbreaking situation. We can't put ourselves in their shoes at all, but certainly we just stand back and hurt with them right now.

"We'll find out more as all the medical people tell us what's going on. We just want to join them right now with our thoughts and prayers for that young man."

The Golden Hurricane (1-1) raced to a 35-3 halftime lead and then focused on the running game in the second half. Tulsa outgained Tulane (0-2) in rushing yards, 364-7.

"The energy was really good," said Blankenship. "I do think the coaches, the players, everybody came into this game knowing we needed a fast start. We had started fast at Iowa State, we just didn't keep our foot down. It was important all the way through halftime we continue to score, continue to try to play defense and play well."

Green completed 13-for-17 passes, including a 74-yard touchdowns strike to Thomas Roberson in the first half. He threw for 252 yards in the first half alone. TU outgained Tulane 651 yards to 177 yards in the game.

"I thought it was a very aggressive, workmanlike performance," Blankenship described. "We challenged our guys. 'Don't wait for the plays to come to you, make something happen.'

"We played aggressive on defense, got after the quarterback, were able to get several sacks and at least harass him in the backfield. I thought Cody Green performed extremely well."

Tulane opened the scoring with a field goal on their first drive, but Tulsa quickly bounced back. After managing minus-one yard on its first possession, Tulsa then converted five consecutive drives into touchdowns.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but both got on the board in the fourth. Tulsa backup quarterback Kalen Henderson hit pay dirt on a five-yard run, and freshman kicker Daniel Schwarz gave Tulsa a 45-3 lead with 4:26 to play. The Green Wave got its only touchdown of the game when quarterback Devin Powell hit Ryan Grant for a 66-yard score with 3:30 remaining.

The TU defense was dominant all game, racking up six sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Linebacker DeAundre Brown once again led Tulsa in tackles with eight.

"I'm excited to go see what his stat line looks like, how he actually graded out," Blankenship said of Brown. "He was all over the field. I think he's playing at a real high rate of speed right now, playing like a senior that's been there before. I think DeAundre has taken advantage of the fact, he's down 10 or 15 pounds from where he was a year ago, and I think he's playing a lot faster."
