Bryant Young resigns for non-football reasons

Florida's Bryant Young resigned from his position as co-defensive line coach Wednesday, per an announcement from UF.

"After heavy consideration and giving over two decades to the game of football, I have made a personal decision to resign from my position at the University of Florida in order to pursue more time with my family." Young said in an official statement.

Arriving shortly after UF coach Will Muschamp in 2011, Young spent two seasons on the Florida staff but was one of the only assistant coaches to not have his contract extended last offseason and still did not have a deal in place for 2013 through spring camp.

In January, the Gators hired South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing and put him into a position as co-defensive line coach and assistant head coach. For his title, Lawing is set to make $390,000 per year for the next three seasons. Young made $230,000 in each of his two years in Gainesville.

"We are very thankful for Coach Young's contributions to the program and I respect his decision. This is strictly a personal decision and has nothing to do with NCAA compliance, but just an opportunity to evaluate his future path," Muschamp said in an official statement. "I always have, and will continue to be very supportive of Coach Young and his family. Our entire staff will be there for him to provide any assistance and guidance in the future. We wish he and his family nothing but the best."

Young previously served as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame and a defensive line coach at San Jose State before arriving at UF. Before becoming a coach, Young had a 16-year National Football League career for the San Francisco 49ers and was a four-time All-Pro selection.
