Business as usual for Gators in nail-biter

No. 15 Florida and Florida State are teams on entirely different roads to similar destinations. For further proof of that, do no more than focus on the team's head coaches after the game.

Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton was immaculate after Friday's 67-66 loss to Florida. He could have come from a basketball game or a wedding. Either way, he wore a satisfied smile.

"We will grow up; we can learn from this," he said. "The future looks bright. The future is now. We have to not just come close. An overtime loss at Michigan and a one-point loss on the road at Florida doesn't sit well in March."

Billy Donovan was his usual loosened and antsy postgame self.

"It was a really ugly game for us, and give Florida State credit," Donovan said," they probably had something to do with it. I didn't think we played great. We didn't take advantage of what was there."

Though not nearly as extreme on either side, the basketball game had a similar feel in reverse terms. Donovan knows his team is good or else he wouldn't throw the public shots he has this year.

He feels confident criticizing Dorian Finney-Smith, who went 2 for 12 from the field before sinking the game-winning free throw (after missing the first), or Scottie Wilbekin, who misread the Gators' last play to set up Finney-Smith's rebound and free-throw attempts.

Discarding Eli Carter, who appears destined for a medical redshirt, Donovan is coaching a team that could be an eventual March favorite but only has six scholarship players right now.

The pieces are in place. They just need addition around them. Depth will continue to be a struggle.

Michael Frazier II sank five timely 3-pointers to propel Florida late. Casey Prather remains the Gators' go-to offensive weapon and had 19 points against the Seminoles.

"I'm just glad we came out with the win," Prather said. "I was trying to play as aggressive as I can and do whatever I could to help the team win. Tonight was a good night for me to help the team score."

Florida's play seldom equaled the effectiveness of a sold-out and loud O'Connell Center crowd, but when it did, the Gators showed the kind of promise the Seminoles are still looking to develop.

FSU's starting guards entered on a hot streak but left after going a combined 2 for 11 from the field with four total points. Hamilton pointed toward it being their first time playing in front of a hostile environment this season and learning from experiences like this.

"You have to give Florida credit. They did a good job defending us," Hamilton said. "They're a good basketball team. And they have good schemes."

Still, the Seminoles managed to come within a close Hail Mary buzzer-beater of a win.

"If it goes in, you've got to live with it," Donovan said.

Florida didn't have to live with it, but that won't make practice any easier come Monday.
