Instant Analysis: Gators leave NYC victorious

No. 16 Florida (8-2) finished its grueling stretch of four-straight non-conference games against ranked opponents 3-1 with a 77-75 win against No. 15 Memphis (7-2) Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Instant Analysis takes a look.

IT WAS OVER WHEN: Another one came down to the wire for the Gators in non-conference play. Joe Jackson got the ball as the clock ticked toward zero and drove to the lane looking for the tying bucket. The shot bounced off the backboard and was tipped out of the offensive zone as the game ended.

HE STOLE THE SHOW: It doesn't even feel like a big deal any more when Casey Prather scores 22 points like he did against Memphis. Prather cruised to that performance, sprinkling in an acrobatic block here or an effort rebound there along the way. His final line included five rebounds in 40 minutes.

THE STAT DOESN'T LIE: It was offset to some degree by 18 turnovers, but Florida owned the glass at both ends. With a major experience advantage up front, the Gators outrebounded the Tigers 35-26 and had five more offensive rebounds than Memphis. Patric Young and Dorian Finney-Smith led Florida with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

WHAT A PLAY: Michael Dixon Jr. missed a free throw, but there were bigger things in store for the Tigers. Geron Johnson got an immediate read on the missed shot, but in front of two Gators defenders and threw down a big tip slam to tie the game at 55 with 11:08 remaining in the second half. It was part of a 17-point night for Johnson.

THE BOTTOM LINE: With four senior guards that each average 21.5 minutes or more per game, Memphis is built to play in transition. Florida isn't, but that didn't keep the Gators from going head-to-head with the Tigers in a rapidly paced game that featured constant big plays at both ends. Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the field.

UP NEXT: The Gators travel to Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday for a matchup with Fresno State at 4:30 p.m.
