Instant Analysis: Gators win in the final seconds

No. 2 Florida (24-2, 13-0 Southeastern Conference) played its worst game of the season but still found a way to pull out a win against Auburn (12-12, 4-9 SEC), the No. 158-rated RPI team in college basketball 71-66. The Gators have now won a school record 18 games in a row and tied the best start in school history. Instant Analysis takes a look.

IT WAS OVER WHEN: Fouled with 18 seconds left after Auburn tied the game at 66, Patric Young made two critical free throws to give Florida a two-point lead. The Tigers threw the inbound away on the ensuing possession, and Scottie Wilbekin drained the game from there with free throws.

HE STOLE THE SHOW: Florida's offense drifted in and out of consciousness throughout the night, but Casey Prather was often the rock that kept the game from sliding entirely out of line. Florida's leading scorer shot 6 of 8 from the field and finished with 16 points to go along with nine rebounds.

THE STAT DOESN'T LIE: It was an ugly night for Dorian Finney-Smith, who could have been the X-factor of sorts in a game against a team that lacks frontcourt talent. Instead, he had his worst game as a Gator. Finney-Smith had trouble penetrating early and instead decided to try his hand from 3-point land. He went 0 for 5 and has missed 21 from beyond the arc in a row dating back to Jan. 30.

WHAT A PLAY: The O'Dome needed some rejuvenation. Wilbekin and Prather delivered just that. The Gators opened the second half on a run that closed an eight-point deficit. It climaxed when a missed KT Harrell jump shot turned into a Will Yeguete rebound and a fast break for Wilbekin who tossed a long lob pass to Prather for a big slam. Auburn called a timeout, its lead cut to two. Cheers could be heard next-door at McKethan Stadium.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Auburn wasn't nearly as lackadaisical of a post-Rupp homecoming date as Florida hoped it would be. No one was hotter than the Tigers, who seemed to make one big shot after another. Auburn came in averaging 30.8 percent from beyond the arc on the season and shot 10 of 19 from deep against Florida. The Gators overcame it thanks to some timely shooting of their own - eight 3-pointers - and a 36-22 rebounding advantage along with 23 of 28 at the free-throw line.

UP NEXT: Florida travels to Oxford, Miss., Saturday to take on Ole Miss (16-10, 7-6 SEC) at noon ET.
