EA SPORTS Elite 11 Tracker Top 100

Today marks the fifth edition of the EA SPORTS Elite 11 Quarterback Tracker Top 100, a list of the nation's top 100 quarterbacks and also included this week is a closer look at the 10 players that just missed the cut for the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 camp.

With the naming of the 2005 EA SPORTS Elite 11 yesterday, an exhaustive search for the nation's top quarterback prospects came to an end.

While the 12 selections certainly stand out, there was no shortage of very qualified and deserving candidates this year and the selection process was more difficult than ever.

Here's is a look at the next 10 players that were under heavy consideration - these players showed great ability and could no doubt compete with any quarterback across the country and deserve recognition as well for their efforts this spring and the promise they've shown for the future.

The EA SPORTS Elite 11 Next 10 (listed alphabetically):

Alex Cate
Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood
At about 6-0, 190 pounds, Cate reminded us a lot of former EA SPORTS Elite 11 signal caller Joe Cox who signed with Georgia last year. He's as steady as they come and had strong workouts at the Stanford NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workouts at Cal and in Las Vegas. Cate throws a nice, catchable ball, is very accurate and is strong mechanically. He put up huge numbers as a junior throwing for 3,437 yards and 40 touchdowns and committed to LSU in early June.

Michael Herrick
Valencia (Calif.)
The SoCal signal caller maybe small in stature at 6-1, 180 pounds, but he has a very live arm and can make all the throws. Herrick was one of the top three quarterbacks we saw at the Stanford NIKE Camp but to see the quarterback perform in pads is to really appreciate him. Herrick is the ultimate gamer who battles and is very tough. He has earned Student Sports underclass All-American honors the past two seasons and threw for 4,069 yards and 33 touchdowns last season. Currently holds an offer from Ole Miss.

Demetrius Jones
Chicago (Ill.) Morgan Park
Participated at the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Las Vegas, where he impressed with his attitude, athleticism and accuracy. Is raw mechanically and pushes the ball more than throws it, but still gets it where it needs to go. Very above average athletically and has added some muscle to his frame recently. Hasn't had a tremendous amount of coaching to this point but picked up on drills well and asked good questions. A natural leader and someone other players gravitate towards. Had a huge junior season, accounting for over 3,400 yards of total offense and 42 total touchdowns while throwing just two interceptions. Has nearly 40 scholarship offers and likes Notre Dame, Illinois, Purdue and some others.

Colin Kaepernick
Turlock (Calif.) Pitman
Opened eyes at the Stanford NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Berkeley and then threw very well in Las Vegas. No one did more to help themselves this past spring than Kaepernick. The NorCal quarterback went from barely appearing on anyone's radar to being seriously considered for one of the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 spots at the national camp. He has one of the top five arms seen at a NIKE or EA SPORTS Elite 11 camp this year and gets better and better every workout. He's thin and will need to fill out some, but he has a lot of potential and is someone colleges should be watching closely in the fall.

Greg McElroy
Southlake (Texas) Carroll
Stood out at both the NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Fort Worth and also the final workout in Las Vegas. Would have had a great shot to make the final camp if he had played as a junior, but was stuck behind Missouri-signee Chase Daniel. Another workout warrior, who spins the ball well with great timing. Can make all the throws with above average arm strength and is pretty sound technically despite lack of playing time. A committed player who has worked very hard to make himself into a very viable prospect despite his lack of field experience. Already has offers from Ole Miss, Texas Tech, North Carolina, Kansas, UTEP and SMU, and more should come this fall, as McElroy should post huge numbers this fall as Southlake Carroll looks to defend its Student Sports FAB 50 national championship of 2004.

Chris Paul-Etienne
Miami (Fla.) Edison
Came out of nowhere at the NIKE Camp in Miami and emerged by the end of the camp as the QB with the highest upside at the position. Rail-thin but possesses the strongest arm seen at a NIKE event in South Florida over the past five years. Even more impressively, made some very nice touch throws down the field on streaks and corners, dropping the ball in nicely to closely guarded wideouts. Needs a lot of work technically and can take some heat off of his shorter throws, but has a huge upside with athleticism and arm. Threw for right around 1,200 yards as a junior and earned 3rd team all-area honors. Currently holds offers from Alabama, Illinois and Minnesota.

Christian Ponder
Grapevine (Texas) Colleyville Heritage
Had solid showings at both the NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Fort Worth back in April. A well-built, thick athlete with a good attitude. Tested very well and is a better athlete than he may appear on film, with above average athleticism. Has some good upside with his live arm and ability to make all the throws. Threw for 1,455 yards as a junior and has over a dozen offers including ones from Oklahoma State, Arizona, Utah, Georgia Tech and others.

Jeremy Ricker
Harrisburg (Pa.) Bishop McDevitt
Was one of the top quarterbacks at the NIKE Camp in State College and also showed well at the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Las Vegas. Has good physical tools and a mature body. Showed plus arm strength and throws a nice deep ball and can also throw on the run effectively. Put up good numbers as a junior throwing for 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns with just six interceptions, also has rushed for 263 yards and six more scores. Recently narrowed his choices to Maryland and Oregon.

Nick Stephens
Flower Mound (Texas)
Another sleeper who emerged with a very solid showing at both the NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Fort Worth. Was ineligible as a junior after transferring from Flower Mound Marcus to Flower Mound, but has a lot of tools that should help him have a big senior season. Had one of the camp's strongest, if not the strongest arms in Texas, and absolutely can zip balls to the sideline with accuracy. Like McElroy, Stephens received over half a dozen offers following his strong camp showing and recently committed to Ole Miss.

Adam Weber
Shoreview (Minn.) Mounds View
A sleeper out of Minnesota that emerged through the camp circuit as a QB to watch in the Midwest. Was the top thrower at both the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout and the NIKE Camp in Ann Arbor. Has very good arm strength and can make all the throws. A tough 'gamer who plays fearlessly on tape, Weber will be a four-year starter at Mounds View, with nearly 3,000 career passing yards entering his senior year. Currently holds offers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Miami-Ohio and Western Michigan.

Below is the fifth EA SPORTS Elite 11 Quarterback Tracker Top 100, which lists the nation's top 100 quarterbacks after tape and in-person evaluation. This list is subject to change and will be updated weekly throughout the summer and fall.
