Boston College offensive guard Josh Beekman just finished a senior season in which he earned second-team All-America honors from Rivals.com. He has agreed to write a diary for Rivals.com as he gets ready for the draft.
In this entry, Beekman discusses his preparations for the NFL Scouting Combine that will take place Feb. 21-27 at Indianapolis. He received advice from a couple of former Boston College teammates on what to expect
"I just want to keep doing what I'm doing. I want to keep working on my technique for the Combine. Staying in shape is most important. You need to be in shape to play football. The clock is ticking, but I can't wait to head out to the Combine. It's going to be a new experience, and I want to be in the best shape possible.
"I've talked to a couple of old BC guys (New York Giants offensive guard) Chris Snee and (Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle) Jeremy Trueblood. They said what I've said before, that it's just like a job interview. The Combine is designed to test you mentally and physically. They said you might have to test at 6 in the morning, be in meetings all day and do another test later in the day. It's just about keeping yourself prepared for whatever. You're going to need mental toughness. You have to do what you have to do. That's why you've been training. With those words, I said, 'OK.'
Beekman also is watching his diet as the Combine approaches.
"As long as I'm at a good weight where I think I can move, run and be 100 percent efficient and it won't slow me down, I think I'm good. I think my weight has probably decreased about five to seven pounds (since the end of the season). I just watch what I eat and try to be smart about it. The food you put in your body is the fuel you'll need later on down the road. Hopefully I'm doing the right things to get my body in the best shape it can possibly be.
"My diet has really been about the same. You really do want to watch what you eat during the season. I get all the vitamins and vegetables I possibly can. You also need those meats. During the season, I'd have a salad with chicken, but I'd also have steak to bulk you up. Now I think I'm watching more (closely) what I eat and when I eat. I want to be leaner and have less poundage so hopefully I can be faster. For me, it's just been salads and a lot more oatmeal, cereal snacks. It's the same stuff I usually eat, but to a higher degree. I'm having a little less red meat and a little more white meat.
Although Beekman is training in Jacksonville, Fla., he hasn't gotten a chance to see Florida's tourist attractions. He's been too busy preparing for the combine.
"I'm down here for a purpose. I'm down here to train. I'm trying to make myself a little bit better. I haven't gotten to see Florida much, but that comes with the territory. You're here for a job. You're not here for pleasure. You're here for business. When we went on away trips, we went to some fabulous places that I wouldn't have visited if I hadn't gone to BC, but it was always business first. Maybe after the Combine, I'll try to get somewhere just to relax my body, but the way I am, I constantly have to be pushing myself or I feel like I'm slacking."
Although Beekman is looking forward to the Combine, he believes his game tapes from his Boston College career provide the best examples of his pro potential.
"I think your best résumé is what you did on game day. Anybody can go and throw high numbers or be productive in tests. My best asset is going to be when I tell a coach, 'Hey, this is who I am. This is what I did on tape.' Would it help if I get the results at the Combine? Yeah. But I tried to work as hard as I possibly could in college. I think that's the real eye opener."
