JFK & Dragons advance in Gauchos Tourny

On Friday, Kennedy (JFK) easily defeated the Willie Howie All-stars, 56 - 30 and the NY Dragons upset the Gauchos (Black), 59 - 54 in the quarterfinals of the Gauchos 2007 Roundball Classic, and advance to the semifinals today begining at 6pm at the Gaucho Gym in Bronx, NY.



The first game featured two Bronx, NY schools. Kennedy, which consisted of players from JFK High School, against the Willie Howie All-stars, comprised of players from James Monroe High School. JFK's star player, Kadeem Nicholas, was sidelined for disciplinary issues but it was irrelevant in this game as guard Chris Floyd easily filled his shoes. At the half the score was 22 - 15, JFK and they never looked back. High scorer for JFK was Floyd with 24pts.



The second game of the evening pitted the Gaucho (Black) against the NY Dragon. The Gaucho's featured star guard, Russ Smith of Molloy High School in Queens, NY while the Dragon's, featured Wadleigh High Schools high flying senior forward, Curtis Loving. In the beginning, the Gauchos displayed a balanced attack on the offensive as Smith scored three pointers at will. They went into the third quarter leading, 30 - 28, however after a series of monster dunks by Loving and a non-Gaucho-like relaxed defense, the Dragon gained the lead 55 - 54 with 3:41 left on the clock. The Dragon's defense in the fourth quarter was so impressive that the Gauchos would not score another point and loss the game 59 - 54. High scorer for the NY Dragon's was Curtis Loving with 13pts while the high scorer for Gauchos (Black) was Russ Smith with 15pts.

JFK goes into the semifinals to play the Gauchos (Orange) which features, Kemba Walker, Durand Scott and Jordan Theodore while the NY Dragons advance to the semis to play the Metro Hawks which feature Lamont Jones. Both the Gauchos (Orange) and the Hawks received byes in the quartersfinals.

Highlights of the championship game, which takes place on Sunday, will be featured on NYC Hoops.
