Weber wins Groza Award

Arizona State redshirt freshman Thomas Weber won the Lou Groza Award on Thursday, awarded annually to the nation's top kicker.

The trophy was presented to Weber during ESPN's "The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards" in Orlando, Fla.

Weber, from Downey, Calif., connected on 22 of his 23 field goal attempts on the season, including a 53-yarder and the 37-yard game winner against Washington State. He went 6-of-6 from beyond 40 yards.

Following the University of Arizona game, in which Weber made both of his field goal attempts and punted eight times, he was selected Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season.

He took over the punting duties in the middle of the season and finished with 42 punts for an average of 39.6 yards, with 10 finishing inside the 20-yard line.

Weber set a school record by making 17 consecutive field goals, which were the first of his career. He is also the leading scorer in the Pac-10, with an average of 9.0 points per game.

Earlier this week, Weber became the 12th Sun Devil to earn All-America status from the Walter Camp Football Foundation. He was also selected to the Rivals.com All-American third-team, and Rivals.com Freshman All-American first-team.
