The Buckeyes wrapped up the annual jersey scrimmage on Saturday afternoon without much fanfare with the offense once again winning the scarlet jerseys but more attention may have been paid to who was not wearing any colored jersey for the 165 scripted plays.
Much has been made of the shoulder of wide receiver Brian Robiskie and the status of the returning senior wide receiver. The Cleveland (Ohio) native did not play on Saturday but it doesn't appear at this point that he is in a position that would cost him any game action.
"Brian got dinged a little bit in the shoulder," head coach Jim Tressel said. "That was a trainer's decision (to hold him out)."
Does this mean that things could be shut down for the rest of fall?
"I think he will be back next week," Tressel said.
Chris Wells missed live action this spring during the annual spring game as well as most of the way through spring camp. The junior running back has seen action during the fall camp but was held out of live action on Saturday but who's call was that exactly?
"Chris didn't play," Tressel said. "(It) was probably a coach's decision, as in the head coach (laugh)."
With Beanie coming off of so many injuries was it a decision to just hold him to keep him fresh going into the season or more of a matter of not needing to see what Beanie is capable of doing?
"I have seen Beanie, he is pretty good," Tressel joked.
Ohio State's backfield was thin on Saturday as well with sophomore running back Brandon Saine held out of action with a reported leg "ding". It doesn't appear to be anything too serious and expect the Piqua (Ohio) star to be back in the mix very soon. Redshirt freshman runner Daniel Herron saw plenty of action but was slowed toward the end of the scrimmage with a bit of a tweak on his knee but it reportedly didn't require much time from the training staff.
Defensively the team managed to stay on the up and up health-wise with only returning defensive end Lawrence Wilson needing to see the training staff, but it is a far cry from the fractured leg that shut him down in the 2007 season.
"(He) didn't play in the last ten or 15 plays or something like that," Tressel said. "(It's) bottom of the pile, landed on by about 15 people "
The Buckeyes will take the practice field on Monday in front of fans for an open practice in the evening at the Horseshoe. It will be a chance to see who is in, who is out and who is wearing the black no-contact jersey.
