- Former California swimmer, Natalie Coughlin, who became the first American woman - in any sport - to win six medals [one gold, two silver, three bronze] in one Games.



The 2008-09 season continues to close in on the Creek, but before it begins, there is the close of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, where, led by Stanford, former and current conference athletes have racked up 76 total medals as of Friday.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the football rules committee outlawed the horse-collar tackle amongst other rule changes for the 2008 season.





Oregon

In football, quarterback Nathan Costa suffered a knee injury and is out for the season.




WSU

In football, converted defensive lineman Andy Roof was dismissed from school, JC defensive lineman recruit Josh Luapo was academically ineligible and was replaced on the roster with JC linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis while senior offensive lineman Dan Rowlands has quit football due to chronic shoulder injuries.

In soccer, Wazzu opened the 2008 season with a victory over Montana on a game-winning goal from junior forward Kiersten Dallstream.



Arizona

In volleyball, former Arizona athlete Kim Glass was part of the USA squad which won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

In football, projected starting tight end Rob Gronkowski is out while he is being tested for mononucleosis and the Wildcats received a verbal commitment from linebacker Taniela Maka.



UCLA

In football, junior offensive lineman Micah Kia broke his hand and his status for the season opener is undetermined.



California

In football, sophomore quarterback Kevin Riley was named as the starter in the season opener.



Washington

In men's hoop, Tyreese Breshers underwent surgery on his shin and his status for the season has not yet been determined.



Stanford

In football, offensive lineman Gustav Rystedt is out for the season opener after suffering a concussion.



Oregon State

In baseball, former Beaver infielder Brian Barden claimed a bronze medal as part of the USA team in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.



USC

In football, running back C.J. Gable suffered ankle and hip strains in practice and his status for the season opener is undetermined.



Arizona State

In football, New Mexico was placed on three years' probation for recruiting violations incurred during the tenure of and involving current Sun Devil assistant coach Grady Stretz.
