Free Preview: Sylmar athlete looking good & more

The Bruins have had success by recruiting versatile athletes who bring a lot to the table. You know the type of player who could come in and play several positions.

One player that fits the bill is Clarence Simpson from Sylmar, Calif. Simpson stands 6-foot-3, weighs 195 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds. He benches 255 pounds, and he squats 380 pounds.

Simpson played quarterback last season, but he will return to his more natural position of wide receiver on offense. He will once again line up at free safety as a senior.

As a wide receiver, Simpson is very quick off the line and runs very good routes. Another thing to like about Simpson is he is very focused and disciplined.

Simpson is a very physical player regardless of what side of the ball he lines up on or at what position. The going consensus is - Simpson is still growing.

A natural all-around athlete, Simpson is a stellar performer in track and participates in several events. He long jumps, triple jumps and runs the 100-meter.

Simpson will earn his scholarship on the gridiron however, and he could end up as either a wide receiver or a free safety on the D-I level.

UCLA isn't only school showing interest in Simpson. USC, Oregon and Arizona are giving recruiting attention to Simpson.

Another thing that the D-I schools like about Simpson is the fact that he is already qualified with a 3.4 GPA and 980 SAT…

The word on the street is that the Bruins offered Anaheim (Calif.) Servite wide receiver Matthew Slater a scholarship offer. Slater stands 6-foot-1, weighs 185 and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4. Slater is another fine wide receiver prospect from the Golden State and his stock is on a definite rise.

The word is Slater has been offered by both UCLA and Colorado. Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame, and USC are also showing interest in Slater.

In an earlier interview with BruinBlitz Servite offensive coordinator Ed Drzanek said, "Matthew is a bonafide super player. Before everything is said and done, everybody is going to recruit Matthew."

Slater certainly has the bloodlines. His father is former Los Angeles Ram and current Hall-of-Famer offensive lineman, Jackie Slater.

Slater also has a younger brother who is an offensive lineman along the lines of his very talented dad. If that is true then you can bet the Bruins will be back when the younger Slater is ready to be recruited.

Stay tuned…
