3-2-1: Florida offense statistically regressing, Pineiro thriving and more

With Florida's 31-13 loss at FSU in the books, Inside the Gators takes a look at the week ahead with a 3-2-1 report. We provide three observations, present two questions and make one prediction as the Gators head into a road matchup with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

Three things we learned this weekend:

1. Viewing this season as a whole up to this point, Florida statistically hasn’t made much progress offensively from the final year of the Will Muschamp era to now. Overall, it has regressed actually.

Florida finished the 2014 season 96th nationally out of 128 FBS teams in total offense, 56th in scoring offense, 106th in passing offense and 43rd in rushing offense. Jump to 2016, and after the Gators’ loss to the Seminoles, the group ranks 114th, 104th, 86th and 104th in each of those respective categories. In 2015, the Florida offense was 112th, 100th, 86th and 113th in those categories.

To put it in further perspective: Florida's offense has been responsible for more than 20 points just once (a 24-point outing against Georgia) over the past two months. During that stretch, the group has scored just nine touchdowns, with only three coming in November.

That’s clearly not the results the Gators have been looking for.

Obviously, McElwain inherited a difficult situation from Muschamp, but those numbers are simply unacceptable – and frustrating for a fan base that has been deprived of good offenses since Urban Meyer left Gainesville. Florida is obviously relatively young at multiple positions on offense, including along the offensive line and at receiver, but those two groups have been inconsistent this year.
