Behind Enemy Lines: Vanderbilt Q&A

Chris Lee of VandySports.com answers an array of questions about the Vanderbilt football program in advance of the Commodores' Saturday matchup with the No. 23 Florida Gators in Nashville at noon ET that will be televised on the SEC Network.

Vanderbilt has obviously started the season 2-2, with losses to South Carolina and Georgia Tech. What factors have contributed to the early struggles?

CL: Simply put, Vanderbilt hasn't moved the ball with consistency, and certainly hasn't stopped opponents from doing the same. VU ranks 13th in the Southeastern Conference in total offense (312.5) and yards per play (4.6), 13th in total defense (452.5) and rushing defense per carry (5.4) and last in yards given up per play (5.7). It is last in the league in yards per pass (5.9) and tied for 12th in touchdown throws (three). Coach Derek Mason made a lot of noise about getting after the quarterback, and yet VU ranks last in the league with three sacks.

In short, despite the 2-2 record, there are a lot of concerns. When you're out-gained by 140 yards per game and 1.8 per play, that's not a long-term recipe for success.
