Lakeland High School was not only the Florida 5A champion last season, but they were also crowned national champions. According to one of the Gators current commitments, safety/cornerback Ahmad Black, the Dreadnaughts have a shot to accomplish both again this season. "We've got a good shot at (the state championship) if we go out with our heads straight and play like we're supposed to."
The Rivals 250 member may not be the biggest player for the Dreadnaughts, but he is the anchor of the defense. The 5-11, 170 pound cornerback prospect plays safety for Florida's top ranked team, and has posted some impressive stats in his final season. Black has 57 tackles, six interceptions, ten pass breakups, and has scored three defensive touchdowns.
He committed back to the Gators over the summer, but how committed is Ahmad to the Orange and Blue now almost five months later?
The first words out of his mouth when asked about the recruiting process; "I'm committed to the Gators."
As solid as his commitment is, Ahmad says teams are still casting hooks, but it doesn't seem anything will lure him away from the Swamp. "A couple (of schools) contact me still, but it is nothing serious."
Ahmad will be making his official visit to Florida this weekend, and will be making the trip with some of his fellow Dreadnaught. "The twins (Maurkice and Michael) and Paul (Wilson), Steven Wilks will probably come and (Chris) Rainey too." In addition to those names, he believes that the Gatornaughts may also be accompanied by Lakeland defensive tackle John Brown.
Brown joined his teammates on an unofficial visit to the Swamp when Florida beat LSU, and this will be another unofficial visit if the big tackle makes the trip.
Ahmad says he continues to hear from Coach Charlie Strong once or twice a week, and will also speak to coach Urban Meyer every couple weeks.
He also said that he is keeping up with his future team's performance this season. "Yeah I was watching the game (Saturday). (Vanderbilt) almost came back."
Upcoming for Ahmad and his teammates are the 5A state playoffs, as Lakeland begins their title defense against Brandon on Friday night. After their game, Ahmad and his teammates will head to Gainesville to watch the Gators take on the Gamecocks and the former ball coach.
