Burning Questions: Will UF’s depth at offensive tackle become an issue?
Over the past couple weeks leading into the start of fall training camp on Aug. 4, Inside the Gators has explored in-depth some of the biggest questions surrounding the Florida football team.
During his first few months on the job at Florida, Jim McElwain wasn't dealt the greatest hand regarding the offensive tackle situation. After left tackle D.J. Humphries opted to turn pro within McElwain's first month in Gainesville, Florida lost its starting right tackle in Roderick Johnson to a career-ending spinal condition during spring practice.
Florida managed to bounce back with the addition last summer of Fordham graduate transfer Mason Halter as a one-year stopgap at right tackle, while then-freshmen Fred Johnson and Martez Ivey got acclimated to the college game and David Sharpe saw his first action as a starter on the left side.
But now in the second year of the McElwain era, Florida's offensive tackle situation still is somewhat of a question mark and remains one of the positions on the roster where depth is somewhat of an uncertainty.
