Before Florida’s early enrollees moved into their dorms and then began the spring semester on Tuesday, Inside the Gators caught up with UF four-star wide receiver commit Josh Hammond to discuss his road ahead.

ITG: How exciting is it to start your Spring semester at UF and how did you arrive at the decision to enroll early?

Hammond: The decision to enroll early was actually made when I was still recruiting because my brother - he went to college young. It’s very exciting to get up there early, to get around the guys.

ITG: How much of an influence was your brother to committing to Florida?

Hammond: None at all. He hasn’t talked to me about coming at all. He just said ‘Whatever’s best for you, go where’s best for you. Don’t go to Florida because I went there.’ That’s pretty much how it went.

ITG: How was the Under Armour All-American experience for you?

Hammond: It was great. Going up against a lot of great guys, I just wanted to go out there and have a good time and just compete and get to work. Everybody out there is pretty good. I just went out there and tried to play my best and have a good time.

ITG: Do you have a favorite memory from Under Armour in particular?

Hammond: Probably the game. During the week, they didn’t give us a lot of cleats and stuff. We had football pads, gloves… they didn’t give us a lot of stuff and we was like ‘dang, we aren’t getting nothing.’ We showed up to the locker room on game day and it was like cleats galore.

ITG: What strengths do you bring to the wide receiver position?

Hammond: Just being open. Making it easier on the quarterback. Just getting open and catching the ball.

ITG: What have the coaches told you about your role next year and where do they project to see you?

Hammond: Just come in and work hard and we’ll see. It’s going to be a good upcoming season. I’m going to try to play early. I’ll just go up there and compete.

ITG: Is there anybody in this current recruiting class or anybody on the roster you’re particularly cool with?

Hammond: I’ve been getting close to the guys that’s in my room. You got David (Reese), Chauncey (Gardner), all those guys are in my room so I’ve been getting close with them. Freddie Swain, I’ve been getting close with a lot of those guys. That’s pretty much it. Other than that, I try to stay with myself a lot.

ITG: So you’re rooming with Chauncey and David?

Hammond: Yeah and Jordan (Smith) too. All four of us.

ITG: What do you hope to accomplish in your first year at Florida?

Hammond: Just do whatever it takes to win ball games. I want to come out and compete. Try to be the best that I can.
