Plantation, Fla. | There were three hats resting on the table, but it was a Florida Gators one sitting atop the head of a “Chucky” doll in his lap that was destined for Andrew Chatfield.

“Florida is just a special place. Every time I go there, I’m loving it. I’m cool with the coaches and every time I talk with the players they give me good reports.”

The American Heritage four-star defensive end/outside linebacker committed to the Gators on Wednesday. He joins a trio of former Patriots, linebacker James Houston, defensive tackle TJ Slaton, and cornerback Marco Wilson, who each committed to Florida on National Signing Day last year.

“All my friends from American Heritage go there too, so just more love from there.”

The classic horror doll, which originated as a football companion with former Florida defensive lineman Dominique Easley, was an inside joke Chatfield shared with another close American Heritage friend, Nesta Silvera, who also held a “Chucky” doll, and who stuck with his commitment to the University of Miami despite a late push made by Florida.

“Before every game. Me and (Nesta) are going to have it. It’s just a bond we have.”

Chatfield expects to the see the field as an outside linebacker, although he maintains he has the ability to play both there and at defensive end.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior initially committed to Ohio State, but later decomitted in August.

The Buckeyes, Florida State, and Miami each had hats on the table, before Chatfield ultimately decided.

“It’s just the place, man. It’s my home, my guys, next three to four years now.”
