With news breaking Tuesday of Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins leaving to take the Temple head coaching job - and Jim McElwain later confirming it during his press conference - the Gators now have a hole to fill on their coaching staff.
While the Gators could end up going in-house for their next defensive coordinator and then look to fill that staff vacancy at another spot with an outside hire, Inside the Gators now presents some options both inside and outside of the program Florida could end up considering in its search for a new defensive coordinator with a hot board.
RANDY SHANNON
Current position: Associate head coach/co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Florida (2015-present)
Former positions: Miami graduate assistant (1991) Miami defensive line coach (1992), Miami linebackers coach (1993-1997, 2000), Miami Dolphins assistant/linebackers coach (1998-2000), Miami defensive coordinator (2001-06), Miami head coach (2007-10), TCU linebackers coach (2012), Arkansas linebackers coach (2013-14)
2016 salary: $400,000
Shannon right now appears to be the obvious favorite here to land the defensive coordinator job and see a promotion, as McElwain said Tuesday that the 50-year-old Shannon would "absolutely" be considered as an option for the post. However, if Florida were to roll with Shannon here, it could use a new hire of a position coach on staff who has found past success on the recruiting trail - considering Florida certainly needs a boost in that department. If Florida doesn't promote Shannon here and opts to go with an outside option, would he stick around or find a new destination? No matter what happens, Shannon will likely see a bump in pay in 2017 wherever he's at.
