Evaluating the Newcomers: How Gators’ early enrollees stack up after spring

Size (according to UF’s roster): 5-foot-11, 180 pounds

Where he worked this spring: While Feleipe Franks worked primarily with the 1's and Kyle Trask repped with the 2's, Kadarius Toney saw time mainly with the third-string offense at quarterback this spring as Florida developed a package for the dual-threat signal-caller. At times, Toney received reps with the 2's, as Jim McElwain said Toney earned some snaps with the second-team offense in Florida's second scrimmage of the spring a week before the Orange & Blue Debut.

Statistics from the spring game: 3-of-5 passing, 24 yards, TD; five carries, 74 rushing yards

Observations from Toney’s spring: Although Toney was a bit erratic as a passer in portions of practice open to the media, he has a pretty strong arm. With Toney being a dual-threat quarterback who operated out of a spread system in high school, Florida operated plenty of read-option looks with Toney in the spring game. As a runner, he's incredibly elusive and agile, keeping defenses at bay with his scrambling ability. While he's not a traditional fit for Florida's pro-style offense, Toney is certainly a player who can make things happen when the ball is in his hands.

Where he projects in fall camp: Florida will likely turn to Franks or another one of its more traditional fits at starting quarterback for its pro-style system this fall, but that doesn't mean Toney won't see a role at the position. In years past under McElwain, Florida has aimed to develop a Wildcat package for some of its more versatile athletes on offense. Toney fits the bill in that capacity and could serve that role well in 2017. Additionally, the Gators could also get Toney involved at another position on offense, like receiver.
