In the months of June and July, as preliminary depth charts began to form, the hype for Florida’s defense grew stronger and stronger. Despite losing both Jonathan Bullard, Keanu Neal and Vernon Hargreaves III to the NFL draft, the Gators would be returning star players like Caleb Brantley, Jarrad Davis, Teez Tabor, Marcus Maye, and Quincy Wilson, which was sure to make this defense one of college football’s elites again. But there was a name down deeper on those depth charts that wasn’t getting the hype early on but certainly is now. That name is defensive end Jabari Zuniga.
Zuniga, a former three-star recruit, earned his first start of the season this past weekend against Georgia, and, to be honest, if it weren’t for a plethora of upper classmen on the roster, he would have been starting weeks ago. Zuniga not only leads the nation in sacks for a freshman, but also leads this touted Gators defensive line in that stat column as well with five on the season.
