During a National Signing Day where Florida landed six additions to jump into the top 10 of the 2017 team recruiting rankings, Gators head coach Jim McElwain and his assistants shared plenty of insight about Florida's signees. Below are in-depth evaluations from the coaches on a number of the pieces from the 2017 class.
Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier on three-star quarterback Jake Allen: "He's going to be another guy to come in and really create competition in the position. Obviously, try to create competition and depth there. Jake had a phenomenal year, 13-2, won another state championship, first-team all-state. Really, really excited to add him to the mix and give us another guy who could be the future at our quarterback position. … You talk about leadership, he was the first guy to commit in this class. You talk about a guy who wants to be a Florida Gator and really understands what this program is all about and the great tradition here and the position, the three Heisman Trophy statues out front, he gets all that. Really, really excited to get here, he’s chomping at the bit to come in and compete."
Running backs coach Tim Skipper on four-star running back Malik Davis: “Malik is a phenomenal player in space. If you watch his tape, people cannot tackle him. He has breakaway speed. I think he’s really going to help us getting explosive plays, in the run game and in the pass game. He has excellent hands, a guy that attended Friday Night Lights and did a really good job and impressed me from that standpoint since that day. … Competition brings out the best in you. I think he thrives off of that. He’s excited and wants to get here and do that. Like I said, he’s an explosive guy. Something we wanted to attack in the signing class is getting guys that can make big plays. Just give them the ball and let them do their thing instead of having everything perfectly blocked and all that stuff. I think he’s going to be a guy who’s going to play really well in The Swamp. Gator Nation is going to love him.”
