Florida extends offer to four-star guard

The recent dead period ended Thursday night and Florida wasted no time on the trail, extending a scholarship offer on Friday to 2015 guard Eric Davis of Saginaw (MI).

"We had an open gym and then a few hours later, after a bite to eat, I worked out in-front of the Florida coach (Matt McCall)," said Davis. "He actually offered me before the workout. We sat down and talked for about 45 minutes to get to know each other face to face and he explained why coach Donovan couldn't make it. I'm going to talk to coach Donovan Monday. He may come up this week but coach McCall said they would be watching me in Sacramento (at the Nike EYBL seession April 225-27)."

Florida wasn't the only school with a coach in the Arthur Hill High School gym. UCLA, Central Michigan and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo were also in the building.

Considered by some to be a point guard, and by others to be a combo guard, Davis isn't concerned about being labeled.

"Um, I'd say a combo guard, I guess," replied Davis when asked about his position of choice. "The game has changed, most point guards can also play off the ball. I like to get my teammates the ball. I know I can score. I'm trying to make my teammates better."

A key reason that Florida has been recruiting Davis since October is his versatility.

"Coach McCall said that Coach Donovan loves players who are not one dimensional and can play multiple positions," Davis said. "They feel I'm versatile, I can shoot the ball but I can also be an assist man. "They use multiple guards, but at the end of the day the ball would be in my hands, they don't really have positions they have guards."

Before the Gators and UCLA offered Davis this weekend, he had already amassed an impressive list of offers, including Michigan State, Kansas, Ohio State, Illinois, North Carolina State, Oregon, Iowa, Iowa State, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Missouri and Providence.

Davis is also receiving steady interest from North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, and Michigan.

As the top ranked player in Michigan for the Class of 2015, Davis is getting plenty of attention from in-state programs.

"I like Michigan Sate," Davis said. "Tom Izzo and I are developing a relationship just like I am with all the coaches that are recruiting me. At the end of the day I like every school that is recruiting me the same. Most people think I'm a Michigan State or Michigan guy, I'm just weighing my options. I'm not leaning towards anyone. After the summer I'll sit down with my family and narrow my list to a top five."

Aside from the obvious reasons a prospect would be interested in attending the University of Florida and playing for Billy Donovan, Florida has a built in advantage over the Michigan schools recruiting Davis - the Michigan native doesn't like cold weather.

"No, I really don't," he said. "Coach McCall told me how you don't really have winter down there except for a short period where it's cold in the morning, but 70 [degrees] later the same day."

The 6-fooot-4, 178 pound guard has made multiple unofficial visits to Michigan schools and to North Carolina State. He's also unofficially visited Kentucky for Big Blue Madness and has been to Ohio State. He will see Florida later, for sure.

"I'm going to use Florida as one of my official visits," Davis said. "That's the only one (official visit) I know I'll be taking for sure. I'm just waiting for my family to talk to coach McCall and set it up."

As far as a timeline for his recruitment?

"I'll verbally commit in the Fall, but probably wait to sign in the Spring unless my family thinks it will be best for me to sign early."

Before ending the interview, Davis wanted to offer some advice to fans of programs that like to follow recruits on social media.

"I'm not on Twitter," he said. "So if you see an Eric Davis on Twitter that's not me."
