Gak ruled eligible for 2016-17 season

A day before the Gators men's basketball team opens its season against FGCU in Jacksonville on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, it announced that freshman forward/center Gorjok Gak has been ruled eligible to play this year.

According to UF, Gak was ruled eligible with the approval of a waiver on Thursday and will have four years of eligibility starting this year. The Gators received word of the decision while en route to Jacksonville from Gainesville, according to the school's release, as Gak joined the team later this evening before Friday's season-opener.

“I’m extremely happy for Gorjok,” head coach Mike White said in a school release. “Our administration spent a lot of time fighting for him and during that time, despite assuming he wouldn’t be eligible to play this season, Gorjok was a steady contributor at our practices with his work ethic.”

Gak was originally ruled ineligible due to some aspects of his transcript that needed to be squared away, according to UF. He joined the program before the start of the fall semester in August.

A three-star recruit who committed to UF in late April, the 6-foot-11, 231-pound Gak was the third addition to UF's 2016 recruiting class, joining four-star guard Eric Hester and three-star forward Dontay Bassett. Bassett will redshirt in 2016-17 due to a stress fracture in his right foot, while Hester has been sidelined during some practices this preseason due to injury and illness.
