In Horford, Florida adds front court depth

A second familiar last name will show up on the back of a Florida basketball jersey next season as Michigan forward Jon Horford, well-known as the younger brother of two-time NBA All-Star, and former Gator, Al Horford, on Saturday officially decided to transfer and play his final out his final year of collegiate eligibility in Gainesville, Florida.

A 6-foot-10, 250-pound big man, who averaged 3.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game last season, Horford originally chose to leave the Wolverines in order to seek a larger role and more playing time. He saw action in all 37 contests a year ago.

In the end, as first reported by ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman, he decided that playing a similar number of minutes - but doing so for the Gators under the watchful eye and patient hand of head coach Billy Donovan - was best for his future.

With the addition of Horford, Florida's 2014-15 roster is now complete.

And it's frontcourt has become a bit crowded.

Returning for his sophomore season, Chris Walker is projected to start at either power forward or center next to either redshirt senior Damontre Harris or eventually redshirt junior Alex Murphy, the younger brother of Erik Murphy who transferred in the middle of the 2013-14 season, is not currently eligible until December 2014.

Redshirt senior Dorian Finney-Smith should start at the three with five-star incoming freshman Devin Robinson playing a large wing role off the bench, meaning Horford will mostly be used to spell Walker and Harris as the team's third big-body player.

Horford will be one of five players seeing his first court time with Florida next season, joining Harris, Murphy, Robinson and a pair of four-star incoming freshmen in guard Brandone Francis and point guard Chris Chiozza.

Florida lost a pair of frontcourt starters from its Final Four team in Patric Young and Will Yeguete.
