During his media day press conference Wednesday afternoon, Florida head coach Jim McElwain updated the status on a handful of injured Gators. Among those names were two medical hardships that the second-year UF coach announced.
Redshirt sophomore defensive end Thomas Holley (hip) and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Andrew Ivie (undisclosed) have received medical exemptions as their Florida playing careers are over, McElwain said.
“They’ll continue their education and get their degrees, except they have injuries that obviously will not allow them to go on anymore,” McElwain said.
Meanwhile, redshirt junior linebacker Alex Anzalone and sophomore offensive lineman Martez Ivey (shoulders) will begin fall camp limited.
“Only both for precautionary reasons more than anything, a lot like we did a year ago with a couple of guys,” McElwain said.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Kalif Jackson (patella) and redshirt junior wide receiver/running back Case Harrison, a former walk-on, won’t be available until around the start of the school year in the third week of the month.
McElwain also noted that junior slot receiver Brandon Powell (foot) and walk-on kicker Jorge Powell (knee) are also fully back. Powell missed the second half of the year with his injury he suffered in kickoff coverage in the LSU game, while Powell underwent offseason surgery and missed the spring to rehab his foot injury.
“I know how eager he’s been to get back,” McElwain said of Powell. “We had to kind of put on the reins a little bit as far as his development with that foot. Every indication, our last test, he’s 100%.”
Holley, a former four-star recruit and Rivals100 member in the class of 2014, had struggled with hip issues throughout his Gators career. After taking a redshirt in 2014 following his hip surgery during fall camp, Holley appeared in seven games in a minimal role, but his hip issues lingered on throughout the spring. He dropped 60 pounds and moved from tackle to end during the spring, but his hip injury flared up again and Florida shut him down.
The younger brother of Joey Ivie and a three-star recruit from the 2015 class who committed to Florida during the Will Muschamp regime, Ivie redshirted for the Gators last season. With he and Holley now out of the mix, Florida has 14 defensive linemen currently on scholarship.
