Meet Class of 2021 SG Carson McCorkle

Monday evening the Florida Gators offered Raleigh, N.C. 2021 shooting guard Carson McCorkle of powerhouse Greensboro Day School.

With the second July live evaluation period about to begin, and McCorkle’s Garner Road travel team leaving early Tuesday for Los Angeles, it took a minute to catch up to the 6-foot-3, 170-pound sharp shooter. We eventually did connect with McCorkle, while he was riding in his team’s van on the way to practice, to discuss his recruitment, reclassifying, and upcoming unofficial visits.

How has the recruiting process been?

Really good so far, it can be stressful at times but I am enjoying every step of the process.

Florida offered on Monday was that something you expected or did it catch you by surprise?

It caught me by surprise, I saw coach white watching me play in New York but I wasn't sure if he came to see me or not. The offer was great though.

Since you are in the class of 2021 college coaches are not permitted to call or text you yet. Did a Florida coach call your HS or AAU coach make the offer?

They had talked to my AAU coach and then asked them to tell me to call them. So I called them Monday night. Coach [Darris] Nichols is the one I called and then I talked to Coach [Mike] White the next day.

I think you might be the first member of the 2021 class to be offered by Florida. Did they say anything about that?

They did not but I reclassed so I can play in 2020 or 2021 due to the way I take classes in school. So they said they would have me in whichever class I graduated from.

When you transferred from Raleigh Broughton High School to Greensboro Day you also reclassified from 2020 to 2021 what made you and your family decide to do that?

I lived with another family for the past school year and being away from them with academics and that part of it the school and my family thought I should reclassed to help me get adjusted.

How did transferring to Greensboro Day help your game?

Defensively it helped me a lot and helped me more with my point guard skills as well.

Do you remember what your averages were last season?

I think 11 points and 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

What other programs are showing you a lot of interest this early in your recruitment?

The schools that have offered me in [sic] Clemson, Iowa, Wichita State, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Florida all have shown strong interest in me and then lately Vandy is more interested now and Tennessee and Northwestern and Michigan are pretty strong as well as some others.

Do you have any upcoming visits planned?

I plan to visit Florida for a football game this September and go to a football game at Michigan soon as well. Those are the two I have planned right now.

You have a connection to the Gamecocks through your grandparents and obviously you go to school close to N.C. State. But tell me about Gonzaga. You took an unofficial visit there recently.

Yes sir, they are interested in me as well, they watched almost all my games in New York and my visit there was good. I got to meet some of the coaches and see their facilities

You play with current top 2020 prospect DayRon Sharp. How is it playing with him? How close are you two?

I enjoy playing with DayRon a lot. He is great to have on both sides of the ball on the glass and is a great defensive presence for us. I am close with him for sure he is my roommate with AAU and he's my guy for sure.

What do you feel has improved the most about your game since last July?

I would say my defense has gotten a lot better and my ball handling is getting better.

Your father played ball in college and overseas. What has your father taught you about the game of basketball that has helped evolve your game?

He has helped me a lot with my shooting and moving without the ball. He is good with my change of direction as well.
