After "very average" performances from Will Grier and Treon Harris this past weekend, Jim McElwain is not ready to make a decision on the quarterback situation heading into the Kentucky matchup after the coaching staff stayed up all Sunday night and reevaluated the film.
However, McElwain does foresee both players seeing reps against the Wildcats this weekend.
"Both had good things, both had things we need to work on," McElwain said. "But then again, I look at it as they weren't fatal flaws. They weren't just some of those real scratch-your-head deals as much. I really believe we're better, and again, just another opportunity. So I'll let you know kind of the plan moving forward. But as of right now, both guys did an OK job."
Grier started Saturday's game and had a good start but played with fire as the game progressed and threw a handful of near-interceptions. Meanwhile, Harris played less risky but wasn't too spectacular either in the passing game.
"I thought they both did," McElwain said of winning the quarterback job last weekend. "You know, Treon had an opportunity there when we came into the red area. For whatever reason, kind of sputtered a little bit. Obviously, coming out after half, there were a couple of throws that Will made that, to reference this again, I think Bob Uecker would have had fun with. I don't quite have an answer for that. They were at least pointed in the right direction."
Overall, it was frustrating for McElwain to not see one pull ahead in the battle against the Pirates despite the lack of rhythm created at times from a two-quarterback battle.
"Yeah and yet it just isn't them," McElwain said. "It's little pieces that hurt, when you penalize yourself, being able to overcome those is really what it is. A lot of it goes back to the other 10 around the guys as well, that we've got to get shored up."
"I think the week before might've been the other way, yeah you're right. It's just a preparation that's got to happen. When it's your turn, get up and make the free throw."
As far as the "hot hand" approach at quarterback, McElwain said he's had a mixed bag of results with it in the past.
"I think we maybe did it in '86 and '89, '96, '97. So we've done it," McElwain said. "I'm more concerned that we've got to continue to get better at the other positions as well to develop some consistency."
INJURY AND SUSPENSION UPDATE
After playing against East Carolina this past weekend a bit shorthanded, a few Gators are set to return to practice this week.
Junior safety Keanu Neal (leg) is "ready to roll," while freshman offensive tackle Martez Ivey (knee) will return to practice this week. Senior wide receiver Latroy Pittman will return from suspension this weekend against Kentucky.
"Martez, we're going to try to get him out there in some drills this week and see where that knee is," McElwain said. "You know, really looking forward to that return, as well."
Meanwhile, junior linebacker Alex Anzalone (shoulder), who suffered the injury in the first half of the ECU contest, will be evaluated this week. McElwain listed junior cornerback Vernon Hargreaves (leg) as questionable but his status will be updated later on in the week.
"From an injury standpoint, this week Alex we need to take a look at his shoulder," McElwain said. "It's something that he's had previously, so we're getting that looked at so that's really unknown right now.
Defensive end Jordan Sherit (foot) "seems to be OK," while running back Case Harrison is dealing with a thumb injury and will get that looked at, per McElwain.
If Anzalone, a starter this season, misses significant time, Florida will turn to other linebackers on the roster to compensate for his absence. Antonio Morrison and Jarrad Davis played the bulk of the snaps at linebacker Saturday with Anzalone in the locker room.
"(Jeremi) Powell and, as we kind of move forward, D-Mac (Daniel McMillian). Those guys have got to get in there, too," McElwain said. "It's really where you get, we were thin at that position, we knew and talked about it going in. Those guys are going to have to play a bunch or reps. We've done a pretty good job keeping them fresh in the rotation. It may mean a little more dime at times, based on different personnel groupings you're going to see to be able to kind of take some pressure off the position."
ADDITIONAL NOTES
  • CBS announced Monday that the Florida-Tennessee game in The Swamp on Sept. 26 will be televised on the network at 3:30 p.m. It will be broadcast on CBS for the eighth time in the past 10 years.
  • Despite a shaky effort along the offense line Saturday, McElwain had praise for offensive tackles Fred Johnson and David Sharpe. However, he did criticique the line's footwork. "Offensively, I thought their defensive line and movement took it to us a little bit. And yet we had some really bright spots. I thought Fred Johnson did an excellent job, and [David] Sharpe had a really good ballgame as well at the tackle spots. There were some good communication things moving forward. … I thought the movement hurt them. We had some guys beat us across their face, and we're gonna see that this week again and obviously every time you put something like that on film you're going to see more of it next time. So we've got to get that shored up."
  • McElwain praised Jarrad Davis: "Well, I'll tell ya. He played a ton. He played on every special team. I mean, he's a guy that we knew was very important to this team based on how hard the guy plays, how hard he studies. I think you're right. I'm glad you saw it. I think his play really showed up."
  • McElwain on Ahmad Fulwood, who caught two balls for 15 yards Saturday: "You know, I'm glad you asked that because it wasn't all smoke that we spit out there in that drive after our long kickoff return. When he took that thing and really said, 'I'm not going to be denied,' he really took it to the defender. I saw this, you know, it was great. And we need him. We do. And so, there again, I think that was proof. And I think I said even the week before, he did some really good things that didn't necessarily show up in the box score. But I think that in particular was, to me, really good to see."
  • McElwain on Alex McCalister and Marcus Maye, who returned from suspension this past weekend: "I think both guys, they were excited. I'm sure glad they're back. Made some plays, made want a couple here or there back. But that's all part of it, and we're obviously a better team with them playing."
  • McElwain reevaluated Florida's special teams performance. "When you see the one we did hit on time, it gave us field position and it allowed us to go down and score. A couple of them, they did a good job of kicking away and we kept it in. But overall, a couple of missed field goals, which I have total confidence in him that he'll get the corrected and kick it through. Even though we had a pretty good punting average, we did a lot better other than the one Johnny kind of got off the side of his foot and delivered to a lucky fan in the crowd."
