Over the next couple of days, Inside the Gators will review how each position on Florida's roster has performed up to this point in the 2016 season with a matchup against Iowa in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2 on the horizon. Today, we look at the running backs.

OVERVIEW: Throughout the offseason, the story at the running back was the number of diverse options Florida had at the position, with Jordan Scarlett, Jordan Cronkrite, Mark Thompson and Lamical Perine all in position to battle for reps. We thought fall training camp would shape how the running back rotation would look throughout the year, but instead we were treated to a running back-by-committee approach through the first six games of the year.

At the start of the season, Scarlett emerged as the best contributor in the rotation, while Perine also flashed at points. Meanwhile, Thompson continued to see a significant role in the rotation despite some underwhelming play and Cronkrite's role in the offense gradually diminished. Soon, Florida decided to stick primarily with a two-running back approach down the stretch, after Thompson served a one-game suspension against Georgia for marijuana possession and Cronkrite was away from the team briefly but soon returned.

Scarlett recorded four rushing performances of at least 90 yards in a five-game span during the second half of the year, but against FSU and Alabama he combined for just 70 yards on 25 carries. Overall, Florida ranks 113th nationally in rushing offense with just 131.5 yards per game this season.
