Naples (Fla.) linebacker Spencer Adkins has had the same four finalists for the past two and a half months. With the changes he's planning on making in his recruiting process, unless something unexpected happens, these four colleges are likely to be the only teams with a chance.
At 6-foot, 230 pounds with sub 4.6 speed, Adkins is one of the top rated players in the nation. Rivals.com lists him in the top 100 at number 76 – the 6th best outside linebacker in the country.
As you might expect, over the spring and first part of the summer he was bombarded by college coaches hoping to make his list of favorites. All of that attention soon got to be too much for him.
"I definitely let my focus get away from recruiting. I'm waiting it out until I have no choice but to start taking their phone calls," he told InsidetheGators.net. "The mail is stacked up because I'm only opening it from Miami, Florida, Florida State and Georgia.
"The rest of it I'm not interested in reading anymore.
"When it first started it was exciting to get all the attention, but now I'm going to start telling coaches that I'm settled on four schools and respectfully tell them that since they don't have much of a chance to get me they probably shouldn't call."
He went on to say that none of the four finalists were out in front of the others.
"They're all even right now. I feel like I've bonded with coach Wick (Wickline) and coach Zook a little more than the other coaches right now. Last year they were the first to contact me and offer me. They're (Florida) not in the lead by much. They're all even."
Adkins went on to say that the college that suits him best will be the one that makes him feel most at home.
"When I walk on campus I have to feel comfortable, like I'm supposed to be there. That's going to be the major thing. Then comes playing time and education."
He plans on trying to go to the Miami and Florida State game this Monday night and says that he will try to see each of his favorites play several times this year.
