Prospect to Watch: Dashon Goldson

School: Coffeyville (Kan.) CC

Position: Free Safety

Size and Speed: Goldson is 6-2, weighs 190 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

Favorite Schools: Washington, Arkansas, Iowa State, Ohio State and Florida.

Skinny: Being the last line of defense is a tall order. If the play gets past the free safety, then the offense is probably on its way to six points. But if the free safety is doing his part, then a team can have a lot of success.

For Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, a large part of its success this season has been due to the contribution of free safety Dashon Goldson. With Goldson playing free safety, Coffeyville has built a 6-1 record and is creating quite a buzz out in Kansas.

Goldson originally signed with the University of Washington in 2002. Since then, Rick Neuheisel has been ousted as coach and Goldson has re-opened up the recruiting process.

He still has interest in possibly attending Washington, but with some words of advice from Coffeyville head coach Jeff Leiker, Goldson is listening to what other teams have to say.

“I told him to look for the best fit where any team needs a free safety,” Leiker said. “It still could be Washington. But he reopened his recruiting to find the best place who needs a free safety.”

Washington is still heavily recruiting the 6-2, 190-pound free safety but a few other teams are starting to creep into the picture. According to Rivals.com, Goldson has offers from Arkansas, Florida, Iowa State and Ohio State to go along with his Huskies offer.

Goldson has already set up visits to Arkansas on Nov. 11 and Iowa State on Dec. 12.

Coming originally from Carson, Calif., many Pac-10 teams remember Goldson and are coming back to recruit him, according to Leiker. A pair of teams Leiker mentioned were the California Bears and the Southern California Trojans.

“He is a very physical player,” Leiker said. “His brings speed and toughness to our team.”

Coming off their first loss of the season at the hands of Butler County (Kan.) Community College, Goldson lent a huge hand in his team’s 62-21 rebound win against Highland (Kan.) Community College. Goldson led the defense with nine tackles in that game. Then the following week, Goldson had another impressive performance in his team’s 42-6 win over Ft. Scott (Kan.) Community College. In the game, Goldson had 11 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.

“He is having a real nice season,” Leiker said.

Another appeal to Goldson is that since he redshirted last season and he is on track to graduate in December, he will have three years of eligibility remaining. If he does graduate in December he will be ready to suit up for spring practice.

“If he finds the right place, I would think he would start right away,” Leiker said.
