SEC Spring Meetings: Day two round-up

Spring meetings for the Southeastern Conference continued Wednesday in Destin, Fla., on day two of the four-day gathering. After more discussions and interviews, here's what there is to take away from the second day of the SEC's May tradition.

- Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley gave some insight into what is being done this week to select the SEC's candidates for the selection committee of the College Football Playoff. Each school's athletic director is being asked to submit two candidates by Friday. Foley said Florida has already turned in two names. He did not disclose who Florida nominated.

- Foley repeated Florida's stance against a nine-game SEC schedule, but added that the addition of a ninth game - which Will Muschamp later called inevitable - would not alter the way Florida views its annual rivalry game with Florida State.

"The Florida State game is very important to us, so I don't see that changing," Foley said.

But with Florida set to play Miami for the last scheduled time this year at Sun Life Stadium, questions were brought up about future games against the Hurricanes. Foley said that is not a priority at the moment and would be even less of a priority if a ninth SEC game is added. When questions about Florida's tendency to schedule one FCS opponent each season, Foley responded: "When you play in the SEC and you play FSU, we don't have to apologize for our schedule."

- SEC coaches voted 13-1 in favor of an eight-game conference schedule, with Alabama coach Nick Saban being the only exception. Muschamp said the move is bound to happen in the future because of television.

- Muschamp announced that Buck linebacker Ronald Powell is currently cutting and doing all other drills and is fully cleared for August camp.

- More fallout on the future status of the Florida-LSU rivalry game: Foley and Muschamp both said they would like to keep the LSU game, though Muschamp admitted that two rotating cross-divisional games would be more fair. LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said he is firmly against permanent cross-division opponents, but claimed it has nothing to do with Florida in particular.

- UF coach Billy Donovan is still waiting to find out if incoming freshman forward Chris Walker will be academically cleared to join the team. Donovan said he has his "fingers crossed" but will know more in "a week or so."

- Donovan said Florida has yet to reach out to Rutgers regarding guard transfer Eli Carter to work out way in which he can play right away at UF on an NCAA waiver. Donovan said he would know more about Carter's situation in two weeks.

- Forward Will Yeguete has a 3-4 month recovery process in store after having knee surgery recently. Donovan said he expects him back for the start of preseason activities but added it will be a "process."

- SEC commissioner Mike Slive said figuring out the 2014 conference schedule during this week's meetings is "doubtful" at this point.

- Slive said he has made it clear to SEC schools to upgrade their non-conference schedules. "I don't want (our schools) to play four (non-conference) games that don't interest our fans," Slive said.
