Social Slant: Herbert ready to announce

After much thought Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert is ready to announce his college decision. The Rivals100 member will reveal his choice on July 6th picking between Florida, Miami, and Michigan.

How We Got Here: For much of Herbert’s recruiting process Florida was clearly the team to beat. However, beginning right around the start of the spring evaluation period, it became obvious that was no longer the case. Then, he named a top six, stating that all the finalists were even. Since then then Michigan has been moving up, along with Miami, while the Gators have been fading.

In His Words:

Blake’s Take: Though can and does happen in recruiting, and he did send some mixed signals at the Rivals Challenge, it isn't exactly going out on a limb here to state that Michigan is the safe pick as to who he chooses on the 6th. Over the spring, though he didn't come right out and state it, the feeling was that the Wolverines had passed the Gators as the team to beat. And then after he had an opportunity to spend some time on Michigan’s campus, it became all but crystal clear. The question down the road is if he will elect to take official visits in the fall despite his pledge? If so, don't count out the home state teams just yet.

Other Opportunities at the Position: While Florida has quite a few names remaining on the board, the truth is, of the top targets, they currently aren't leading for any of them. Three of the biggest names – Alex Leatherwood (Alabama), Calvin Ashley (Auburn) and Navaughn Donaldson (Miami) are committed elsewhere. If they don't start seeing some movement in their direction, the Gators may be forced to expand their board by extending offers to instate prospects such as Nick Brahms and/or Cordavien Suggs.
