No Florida baseball players were selected in last week’s MLB Draft, but one current Gator is still turning pro.
Junior catcher Brady Smith signed with the Texas Rangers as an undrafted free agent Monday, executive vice president of communications John Blake announced on Twitter. Smith had two seasons of eligibility left after the NCAA granted an extra year to spring sport athletes.
His 2020 season with top-ranked UF was cut short due to COVID-19. Smith made six starts in 15 games last season, sharing time with freshman Nathan Hickey. He led the Gators to a sweep against Marshall, hitting two home runs and a career-high five RBIs.

Smith started 53 of his 56 appearances as a sophomore, averaging .270 at the plate with five home runs and 20 RBI. He played more games (53) than any freshman in 2018, batting .264 with a pair of homers and 15 RBI.
Smith will be replaced by Hickey, who made eight of his 13 starts at catcher and finished second on the team in home runs (4) and batting average (.311).
The Gators lost two 2020 signees to the draft, with the Colorado Rockies selecting outfielder Zac Veen in the first round and the Baltimore Orioles using a fourth-round pick on infielder Coby Mayo. A third Florida signee, Jackson Nezuh, also announced Saturday he will attend Florida State after UF returned junior pitchers Tommy Mace and Jack Leftwich.
