Latching on to the immense popularity of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been the talk of the social media landscape over the last two days. In addition to "Tebowing" - defined as "to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different" - becoming a new fad, Tebow was mentioned on Wednesday's episode of South Park and was even part of a Taiwanese animation video covering his career in the NFL up to this point. With the Gators going up against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, Tebow may face a familiar foe in Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions (if he is healthy enough) on Sunday. Ironic, no?
In a statement given to a number of media outlets, the University of Florida Police Department said they have indeed sent State Attorney Bill Cervone sworn complaints to charge sophomore defensive tackle Dominique Easley with misdemeanor battery for an alleged attack outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium following the Alabama game on Oct. 1. Former Crimson Tide cornerback, Reggie Myles, has accused Easley of tackling him and is himself being looked at for potential charges of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and theft. The State Attorney's Office will make their decision on whether or not to charge Easley and/or Myles in the coming days. Should Easley be charged and convicted, misdemeanor simple battery would likely result in a maximum of a year of probation and $1,000 fine. Chances are a plea deal would be reached in the case before it goes to trial.
Not currently participating in action with her country, former Gators soccer star Abby Wambach got some bad news on Thursday when she learned that her Women's Professional Soccer league team, magicJack, was terminated by the league after just one season. The Boca Raton-based team featured Wambach as player-coach and U.S. star goalkeeper Hope Solo, both of whom will be looking for new homes in 2012.
Instead of committing to Florida like many believed he would, four star power forward Brice Johnson (Cordova, SC) chose to play college basketball next season for North Carolina. Johnson is the second top recruit in as many months to have the Gators in his final four only to go on and decide to play elsewhere. Five-star point guard Kyle Anderson (Jersey City, NJ) picked UCLA over Florida in September. Though the Gators already have three 2012 commitments, head coach Billy Donovan continues to look for a big man to round out the recruiting class.
Now Florida's latest commitment, four-star tight end Kent Taylor (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) will not be participating in his high school football game this week after being suspended for one game by the Florida High School Athletic Association. Taylor, ejected from last week's game after a referee believed he saw him throw a punch, was given a Level 1 suspension by the FHSAA. After missing Friday's game, he will be able to participate in the Gators' (also the mascot for Land O'Lakes High School) final two regular season contests of the season.
Gators soccer will be participating in its regular season finale on Friday and has an opportunity to earn a share of the Southeastern Conference title with a victory against rival South Carolina. The two teams have competed for the regular season honor in consecutive years and will do so for a third-straight time with USC holding the lead going into the game. The Gamecocks are guaranteed at least a share of the title and can win it outright by defeating the Gators. If UF wins, the teams will split the title at least two ways (a win by LSU against Arkansas would make it a three-way tie). The match will air live on FOX Sports Florida at 7 p.m., so check your local listings for availability.
