Tuesday Insider Practice Notes
Andrew Olson
Inside the Gators

The first practice of the fall semester was reminiscent of the spring game as the fastball session was split into first-team offense vs. second-team defense and vice versa.

* The normal first-team offensive line was split up. Starting center T.J. McCoy worked with the second-team offense and quarterback Malik Zaire. With Martez Ivey, who missed the scrimmage, sporting a brace and out of fastball action, Tyler Jordan worked at left tackle with quarterback Luke Del Rio. We’ve previously seen Jawaan Taylor slide over to left tackle in Ivey’s absence.

* Jordan Scarlett worked with the first-team offense while Mark Thompson was featured with the second-team offense.

* As Nick Washington continues to be held out of fastball, the starting safeties continue to be Shawn Davis and Chauncey Gardner.

* Marco Wilson got in some work as a 4-3 cornerback on Tuesday. He has been primarily a first-team nickel in camp so far. Joseph Putu and Duke Dawson also worked as first-team corners in fastball.

* Kadarius Toney was no longer sporting an orange non-contact jersey, indicating he has made the full transition from quarterback to wide receiver. He had one drop in routes on air, but that will get better with time.

* The highlight of Del Rio’s fastball session was a completion off of a naked bootleg to tight end C’yontai Lewis, who was back after missing the second scrimmage.

* Lewis wasn’t the only tight end back in action. Moral Stephens and DeAndre Goolsby, who both missed the scrimmage, returned.

* With the second team, Zaire worked with a no-back set to find Stephens on the first play. Thompson got stuffed on the line for the second play. Zaire ended his session on a highlight with fake toss to Thompson followed by a roll out, he threw to Massey near the sideline left, who made a great catch with Chauncey Gardner and Putu in the area.

* In routes on air, Zaire struggled with consistency. He missed badly, low, on a pass intended for Brandon Powell.

* Freddie Swain drew praise in practice when he went up and pulled down a high pass from Del Rio. Doug Nussmeier was impressed.
