On Wednesday, Florida head coach Jim McElwain announced that graduate transfer quarterback Austin Appleby would start against South Carolina on Saturday, while anointing Feleipe Franks over Kyle Trask as Appleby’s primary backup.
At the same time, McElwain didn’t rule out playing Franks this year, adding, “We're not afraid at any point of him playing.” Florida needs a spark at the quarterback position, and “Feleipe could be that guy,” McElwain said.
Still, to a portion of the fan base upset with Florida’s direction of the offense, they weren’t fans of McElwain’s move to choose to start Appleby this weekend over one of the two freshmen with Luke Del Rio (shoulder) sidelined. Heck, even our site’s special contributor, Trevor Sikkema, didn't agree with the move after watching plenty of film on Florida’s quarterbacks this year.
I’ve got plenty of replies on my tweets the past couple of days, some from fans calling to #FreeFranks, now with it being apparent that Trask is headed for a redshirt this year.
