With Shannon now officially promoted, assistant coaches to keep an eye on
Although Florida announced Friday that Randy Shannon has been promoted to defensive coordinator, the Gators still have one vacancy remaining on their current coaching staff. With the second domino falling Friday, after Geoff Collins left Florida in December to become Temple’s head coach, Inside the Gators now takes a look at a couple of names both on staff and from the outside worth monitoring early this offseason.
CURRENTLY ON STAFF
Tim Skipper, running backs coach: Skipper, McElwain’s right-hand man, will be on the staff in 2017, but coaching which position: running backs or linebackers? Skipper has served as Florida’s running backs coach over the past two seasons, but prior to that was Jim McElwain’s linebackers coach at Colorado State from 2012-14. Skipper has coached on the defensive side of the ball at every coaching stop he’s made prior to his time at Florida. With Shannon now being promoted to defensive coordinator, that leaves an opening at linebackers coach for the Gators. Would Florida shift Skipper over to linebackers and hire a new coach on the offensive side of the ball?
