With No. 14 Florida's 24-10 win over Georgia in the books, Inside the Gators now presents five takeaways from Saturday's contest in Jacksonville.
1. The Florida defense is riding momentum entering the final month of the 2016 regular season.
Aside from Georgia’s lone touchdown drive of the contest, one where the Gators secondary slipped up a number of times in coverage defending a scrambling Jacob Eason, the Florida defense was outstanding Saturday. Freshman quarterback Jacob Eason and the Bulldogs amassed just 164 yards against the Gators defense - and Florida contained Georgia’s running back trio of Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Brian Herrien to a combined 26 yards on 14 carries while tallying eight TFL. Florida got after it in the pass rush, logging two sacks and 16 quarterback hurries - the latter the most by the Gators defense in at least a decade.
The return of defensive tackle Joey Ivie (thumb) and defensive ends Jordan Sherit (knee) and Bryan Cox Jr. (thumb) proved to be key for the Gators defensive line, as its member actively rotated and managed to stay fresh. The linebacker play was also a strong suit, with Jarrad Davis performing exceptionally despite playing through an ankle injury while Daniel McMillian finished with one of his best outings as a Gator. The secondary also was mostly dominant throughout, with Duke Dawson, Marcus Maye, Jalen “Teez” Tabor, Marcell Harris and Nick Washington among those making key plays throughout the contest. Defensive coordinator Geoff Collins did an excellent job as well of dialing up blitzes against a freshman quarterback facing one of the SEC’s best defenses.
