Dan Mullen filled one of the open spots on his Florida staff by hiring Charlton Warren on Friday.

Warren, a native of Atlanta, coached defensive backs and special teams at Tennessee last season. With Warren coaching the defensive backs, Tennessee allowed the second-fewest passing yards (1,950) and yards per game (161.7) in the SEC. The Volunteers pass efficiency defense (127.8) was ranked seventh in the league.

Prior to coaching at Tennessee, Warren coached at North Carolina for the 2015 and '16 seasons. In 2016, UNC posted the 10th-best passing defense in the country, allowing only 180.8 yards per game through the air.

Warren was defensive backs coach at Nebraska in 2014 when the Cornhuskers ranked No. 5 nationally in pass efficiency defense and No. 32 in passing yards allowed. Nebraska ranked No. 2 nationally in completion percentage (48.5 pct.), 13th in yards per passing attempt (6.1) and 19th in touchdown passes (15).

From 2005-13, Warren coached at Air Force, his alma mater. Warren graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in human factors engineering and earned his MBA from Georgia College and State University in 2003.

Warren's official title at Florida is currently only assistant coach, though his Twitter bio reads "University of Florida Secondary Coach." Warren is the fifth on-field assistant to be hired by Mullen at Florida, joining Billy Gonzales, John Hevesy, Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Four assistants, Chris Rumph, Brad Davis, Ja'Juan Seider and Tim Skipper, were retained from the 2017 staff. Rumph and Davis have been hired at Tennessee and Missouri while Seider and Skipper remain at Florida.
