Former Florida defensive end Johnie Church (1992-1995) shares 10 observations from the Gators' 24-10 win over Georgia.
Well, we took the Dawgs out for a walk and sent them to the pound. Onward and upward Gators!
Here are my thoughts on the game:
1) I kind of like the look of having new kick-returner Chris Thompson back there. He looked explosive and didn't seem to hesitate after catching the ball. If he stays there, I can see a few big plays in the return game for this stretch run.
2) When has it become totally illegal to hit a kicker? Obviously you can't in the process or shortly after him kicking the ball, but I feel he's fair game once everyone has sprinted downfield. They have stopped more than their fair share of touchdowns in games. And, they are definitely trying to mix it up these days with shots on other players without getting penalized.
3) I'd like to see Doug Nussmeier go up in the booth for one game and call plays; just so I can see if there's a difference. I have seen a few offensive coordinators do that of their own free will or at the insistence of the head coach.
4) I don't really like the sprint out pass plays with Luke Del Rio. It doesn't work with him because there isn't pressure on a linebacker or lineman to fall off coverage and go after him because they're scared he'll tuck and go. Those plays are just looking awkward and slow developing to my eyes.
5) Pretty good job in pass protection this week by the "big-uglies". Our vertical passing has to get more accurate as I'm now starting to see guys streaking free on deep routes. Del Rio is still finding his groove and I know that knee is still very sketchy. It was good to that he didn't take many shots this week.
